Geology 531 Hydrologic Datasets

These datasets are either Excel 5.0 spreadsheets or tab-delimited ASCII textfiles. The Excel files require Excel 5.0 or later; the textfiles can be read by nearly any program. Before you use any datafiles, look at the column headers to see what data is in each column. Some programs or macros may require that the column headers be removed before importing the file.

Eureka Rainfall Data

The Eureka raingage is operated by the National Weather Service; its record begins in 1887. From 1 December 1886 through 31 December 1910, the gage was located at the Buhne Building at 2nd and G Streets. On January 1, 1911, it was moved to the US Post Office & Courthouse at 5th and H Streets in downtown Eureka. On October 16, 1994, the gage was relocated to the new National Weather Service office on Woodley Island, about 0.5 mi north of the previous location.

Upper Mattole Rainfall Data

The Upper Mattole raingage operated from 1888 through 1986. It was located in the Mattole R valley about halfway between Petrolia and Honeydew at an elevation of 255 ft. This is one of the wettest areas in Humboldt Co.

Humboldt County Rainfall Data

This is a table of the 1) mean annual precipitation, 2) period of record, 3) elevation, 4) location, and 5) distance from the coast at 57 selected Humboldt County and near-by gages. It was compiled from the California State Department of Water Resources Publication "California Rainfall Summary 1849-1980" and measurements from topographic maps. A map of the stations is available.

Jacoby Creek Hydrologic Data

Jacoby Creek is a small (< 20 sq mi) forested drainage basin lying immediately south of Arcata, CA. The USGS operated a gaging station in the upper part of the basin (DA = 6.07 sq mi) from 1955 to 1964, and a crest-stage gage at the site from 1965-1974.

Dr. Tom Lisle of the Forest Service Redwood Sciences Lab established a gaging station on Jacoby Cr immediately upstream of the covered bridge on Brookwood Dr. (DA= 13.7 sq mi) in the late 1970's. It operated on an event basis into the mid 1980's. Tom has been kind enough to share some of his data with us. HSU hydrology and fluvial processes classes have made occasional additional gaging measurements at this site.
